GMB was contracted for services in 2009 by the Wicomico County Board of Education (WCBOE) for two separate work efforts, to prepare an ADA Compliance Analysis of six (6) existing schools, and to prepare Occupant Load Studies for fourteen (14) existing schools.
The ADA Compliance Analysis was comprised of reviewing and documenting the current states of compliance of each school for accessible parking, exterior accessible routes from parking to the building entrance, accessible building entrance, interior accessible routes to accessible toilet rooms, and accessible toilet rooms. The basis of evaluation was the 2004 Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG), review of existing building drawings, and field investigation of each school. GMB prepared a written report of its findings and recommendations for both short term remediation of deficiencies, and longer-term planning strategies for permanent compliance by the WCBOE.
The purpose of the Occupant Load Studies was to determine the current maximum occupancies of gymnasiums, cafeterias and auditoriums in each school for the WCBOE to use when developing event lease agreements with outside organizations and for planning of different types of school district events. The basis of evaluation was the 2009 NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, review of existing drawings and field verification at each school. GMB prepared a written report detailing occupancies utilizing optional seating configurations, with and without tables, and plan drawings depicting the several optional ways of space utilization. Layout drawings of existing fixed seat facilities, such as auditoriums, were also depicted.
