Oak Orchard Sanitary Sewer District Expansion Area #1

GMB recently assisted Sussex County, Delaware to expand the boundaries of the Oak Orchard Sanitary Sewer District.  This project includes several subdivisions including Captain’s Grant, Driftwood Village, River Village, Oak Meadows, and Oak Orchard West.  Previously homes in these subdivisions used on-site wastewater systems, such as septic tanks or holding tanks to dispose of their wastewater.  Construction of central sewer for this area eliminated approximately 675 existing on-site systems.

The project consists of a gravity collection system.  Pipelines ranging from 8 to 12 inches in diameter were placed within existing rights-of-way where possible.  Individual connections were provided for each home at the street right-of-way.  The wastewater is collected at two regional pumping stations and pumped by a new 16 inch force main to the County’s existing Inland Bays Regional Wastewater Facilities for treatment and disposal.

The engineering design work for this project was divided among three firms.  GMB performed the design work for Contract No. 1 and provided the inter-project coordination and program management for all three contracts.  GMB also provided Funding Assistance and Construction Contract Administration in the field.
